Current Conditions Versus Ideal Conditions Part 1

Easily glossed over early in Practitioner training the Present State/Desired State is a fundamental piece of NLP.

Another way to describe the present state, in comparison to the desired state, is a state of lack or scarcity, something that is keeping us from feeling whole.

The effective life is about distinguishing the sensible steps we can take for advancing beyond our prevailing circumstances and propelling towards our more ideal ones.

NLP Mastery: Revisiting the Basics

We experience life via our representational system modalities. Our rational processing will play a large part in how we perceive the various events and circumstances that we encounter on a day-to-day basis.

The journey of growth is about us learning from our past experiences and using these lessons to become more efficient in our futures. When we assume full responsibility for mastering our internal processes, we will begin working towards the outputs that we want more of in life.

Envisioning the Fully Functioning Human

So what are fully functioning people really like? What characteristics might these individuals express?

One important thing to note is that the concept of the fully-functioning person represents an ideal rather than an end-product.

It is not about achieving a particular status and then being 'done' with our growth as a human being. Instead, the fully-functioning person depicts a journey that continues throughout life as people continue to strive toward self-actualization and further personal development.

Concrete Authority Versus Abstract Authority

In metaphysics, abstract and concrete are assignments that signify whether the object that a term describes has material referents. Abstract objects have no physical referents, whereas concrete objects do. They are most commonly used in philosophy and semantics.

In psychology, Jean Piaget used the terms "concrete" and "abstract" to describe two different types of learning. Concrete thinking involves facts and descriptions about everyday, tangible objects, while abstract (formal operational) thinking involves a mental process. In this video, Kain describes the distinction between each of these mindsets.

Questions to 'Activate' Your Mind

Mental exercise or neurological stimulation can be expressed as anything that stimulates, activates or enriches the mind. Inspiration can be acquired inwardly from our thoughts or externally from the environment.

It is human nature to ask questions. We're an inquisitive species who want to learn about everything that interests us. Throughout history, while many questions have been answered ... some haven't. In this video, Kain introduces several questions for your consideration.

The Dynamics of Facilitating Change

The respected approach to examining new paradigms or viewpoints in life isn't agreement or disagreement - which is often culturally debated.

Instead, if we become exposed to diverse attitudes that conflict with our existing one, ours, in turn, naturally increases and expands.

In this video, Kain reviews some of the primary reasons why some people are very quick to dismiss or reject viewpoints that differ from their own.

Soil Types, Maturity Levels & Outcomes

It's useful to note that not all people desire to change, grow and mature. Countless people are content to remain as they are in the hope of their situations and life circumstances 'somehow' just 'working out' for the best someday.

In this video, Kain uses a proverbial analogy to define the four distinct attitudes people take towards personal growth and development. Our inclination to embrace new ideas (and have our outlooks enlarged) will be influenced by how open we are to contemplating truths that exist beyond our range of life experiences.

A Framework for Useful Thinking

In this video, Kain offers a contemporary exploration of Benjamin Bloom's 'Taxonomy of Educational Objectives'. In modern culture, it is not unusual for learners to mindlessly agree or disagree with what's being taught.

We begin to propel our comprehension, growth and understanding when we take a significantly more critical approach to evaluate, not just ideas, but instead, the reasons WHY we would typically be inclined to agree or disagree with them.

Seven Stages of Personal Growth

Self-development is a process of consciously educating yourself in many aspects of your life. It is the intentional pursuit of individual growth by developing personal skills, competencies, abilities, and knowledge to seek self-fulfilment and proactively fulfil your absolute potential.

Some people live in a state of ignorance and refuse to change until their desire to change becomes greater than their desire to remain as they are. In this video, Kain examines the seven stages of personal growth that we can all pass through in life.

A Container for Conscious Self-Awareness

Humans are more than just conscious—they are also self-aware.

Consciousness is the identification of one's body and environment; self-awareness is the realization of that consciousness - not only knowing that one exists but further understanding the extent of one's existence.

How we identify is determined by how aware we are. In this video, Kain discusses an alternative means of exploring 'identity'; a way of defining ourselves in a wholesome, uncapped and meaningful way.

The ABCs of NLP (Article)

While caught in a traffic jam, one person will honk their horn in rage; another will turn on some peaceful music and just sit and wait, while still another will be overwhelmed with anxiety because they're going to be late. Why do people have different reactions to stress and adversity?

The ABC model offers us an excellent framework for better appreciating the NLP communications model. The great American Psychologist and researcher Dr Albert Ellis created the ABC model in his attempt to help people understand the meaning of our reactions to adversity:

  • A is the adversity—the event or situation.

  • B is the belief or thought—our explanation about why the event/situation happened.

  • C is the consequent emotion and behaviour—the feelings and behaviours that our belief causes.

Seven Levels of Self-Awareness

We achieve personal transformation upon finding the freedom and autonomy to be who we really are. It is only possible for us to grow into higher positions of maturity and understanding once we know what is possible for us.

A Framework for Neuro-Logical Reasoning and Evaluating Beliefs

1
An Introduction to Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs are those which restrain us in some way. Just by believing them, we do not think, do or say the things that they hinder. And in doing so, we undermine the efforts of our day-to-day lives.

We all have limiting beliefs that we've learned about ourselves when we're young; beliefs are just thoughts that have been validated by someone (or something) in some way. In this video, Kain launches the topic of limiting beliefs and offers suggestions about where they might originate from.

NLP Master Practitioner Certification (Advanced to Specialist)

2
Four Categories of Truth

We increase in maturity, decisiveness, integrity and strength as we grow 'up and out' of the limiting ideologies we formed about ourselves during the younger and 'less informed' years of our youth.

What is the truth? This is an interesting but also tricky question to answer. It is possible to distinguish several different definitions (or approaches) of truth. In this video, Kain outlines the four different categories of truth.

NLP Master Practitioner Certification (Advanced to Specialist)

3
Five Categories of Belief

A belief is an attitude that something, or that some proposition about the world is right. In epistemology, philosophers use the term "belief" to refer to attitudes about the world, which can be either true or false.

Humans use beliefs to justify their decision making and behaviour. Our beliefs give us a basis for our emotional maturity in life. In this video, Kain discusses five categories of belief: existence beliefs, association beliefs, cause and effect beliefs, prediction beliefs and meta beliefs.

5
Moving From Experience to Ideas

According to John Locke, all of our knowledge comes from experience. He holds that all of our knowledge is constructed from ideas (think of ideas as atomic building blocks and knowledge as the structures we create out of them).

In this video, Kain interprets how all of the knowledge we possess (including our opinions and worldviews) can be accounted for by accounting for the origin of our ideas.

6
A Dialogue on Exploring New Ideas

Kain and Karen host another dialogue about what it means to create modifications on the level of a belief; not through 'magic' or quick-fix techniques, but by remaining 'open to' considering new ideas.

7
Sigmund Freud's Three Levels of Consciousness

The three levels of awareness in human consciousness (as defined by S. Freud) consist of the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. Each of these levels overlaps with Freud's ideas of the Id, Ego, and superego.

In this video, Kain discusses one of Freud's main contributions in the field of Psychoanalytical Psychology. The human mind can be likened to an iceberg; the main bulk of the mass of ice lies 'beneath the surface'.

NLP Master Practitioner Certification (Advanced to Specialist)

8
The Ego, Superego and ID

According to Freud and his psychoanalytic theory, the ID is the primitive part of the mind that carries motivations, urges and hidden memories; the superego operates as a moral conscience. The ego is the sensible part that mediates between the desires of the id and the superego.

In this video, Kain outlines each of these. He highlights how most people naturally function from a place of selfishness, driven by selfish desires when they are not aware of their superego (their ability to self-regulate and make wiser choices).

9
Milton Erickson and the Critical Factor

The Critical Factor is the part of our mind that analyses, evaluates, and filters incoming thoughts and impressions. The Critical Factor is the gateway between the Conscious and the Subconscious Mind.

In this video, Kain explores some of Erickson's main ideas. He looks specifically at the critical factor, and how Erickson believed it was possible (and also moderately straightforward) to bypass this gateway to reprogram the human subconscious.

Socio-Cultural Learning

Sociocultural theory is an emerging theory in psychology that explores the vital contributions that society makes to individual development. This theory stresses the interaction between developing people and the culture in which they live.

In this video, Kain examines the levels of culture that are naturally (and often unconsciously) engrained in us. He highlights the different aspects of our lives/cultures which influence our thinking and form the basis for our discrimination of difference.

Daniel Kahneman's Cognitive Bias Part 1

The notion of cognitive biases was introduced by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman in 1972 and grew out of their experience of people's inability to reason intuitively with the greater orders of magnitude.

Cognitive bias is a term that refers to the systematic ways in which the context and framing of information influence individuals' judgment and decision-making. In this video, Kain interprets 5 types of cognitive bias'.

This video is part 1 of 2.

12
A Dialogue on Cognitive Bias

A cognitive bias is a systematic delusion in our thinking that occurs when people are processing and interpreting information in the world around them. It affects the decisions and judgments that they make.

In this video, Kain and Karen hold a dialogue on how aware they both are of how cognitive bias is still at play in their lives and also through how they interact with other people.

A Dialogue on Cognitive Bias: Further Distinctions

Cognitive biases can be described as the tendency to make judgments based on limited information, self-interest, overconfidence, or attachment to previous life experiences.

Cognitive biases can result in perceptual blindness or distortion (seeing things that aren't there), illogical interpretation, inaccurate judgments, irrationality, and making poor quality decisions. This topic makes for another honest (and interesting) discussion between Kain and Karen.

15
The Pygmalion Effect (Self-Fulfilling Prophecy)

The Pygmalion effect is a cognitive phenomenon wherein high expectations lead to enhanced performance in a given area. The 'effect' is named after the Greek myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved.

The more we focus on something, the more real and vivid it becomes for us. We act and behave in response to who we believe that we are. Is the Pygmalion effect real? Decades of research have provided robust evidence that the answer is yes. But please, decide for yourself!

The Circle of Disempowerment Versus Empowerment

Your locus of control can have a significant impact on your life, from how you cope with pressure to your motivation to take command of your life.

In many cases, having an internal locus of control can be a good thing. It means that you believe that your actions have a consequence.

In this video, Kain discusses 'locus of control' through the lens of looking at two attitudes we can take towards living life and making decisions. The Circle of Disempowerment Vs The Circle of Empowerment.

Inductive Vs Deductive Thinking Patterns Part 1

Reasoning is something you probably do every day. When you make a decision, you take several ideas and turn them into reasons why you should or shouldn't choose the options you have available to you.

Virginia Satir proposed that there are multiple different thinking styles, and our 'preferred' thinking style is something we develop early in life. In this video, Kain examines the difference between deductive and SELF-expanded thinking.

A Dialogue on Deductive Thinking Patterns

Deductive thinking involves taking valid premises and ultimately reaching an airtight conclusion.

Unlike inductive thinking, which aims to arrive at a decision that is likely or probable, deduction is all about assumptions that lead to a specific determination being reached.

In this video, Kain and Karen discuss the deductive thinking patterns that Karen has been aware of in her life and the outcomes they produced.

The Battlefield of the Human Mind

Whether you realize it or not, whether you understand it or not, all ideas, worldviews, thoughts and philosophies lay siege to your mind, for better or for worse. The mind can seem like a battlefield, so how do we fight it?

In this video, Kain discusses a practical strategy for highly effective self-management, that involves taking every thought captive - and not approving these thoughts unless they deserve to be validated!

21
An Equation for Self-Regulation

In this lecture, Kain discusses a model pioneered by Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck, two notable thinkers in the field of Cognitive Psychology.

Most people think in A to C language; believing that activating events automatically trigger emotional states. This is not accurate.

The truth is that the 'B' (belief) is what defines our emotional response. Kain further unwraps this equation for self-regulation throughout the video and stresses the importance of controlling (policing) our thoughts.

A Neurological Dissection of the Human Experience

Self-regulation can be described in many ways. In the most basic sense, it involves managing one's behaviour, emotions, and thoughts in the pursuance of long-term goals.

More precisely, emotional self-regulation refers to the capability to manage disruptive emotions and motivations.

In this video, Kain introduces a resource that we can use with ourselves and others to dissect our experiences in life and learn how to start practising self-regulation effectively.

Socratic Questioning

Many of us fail to recognize questioning as a skill. And yet, whether in education or coaching, vague, purposeless questions, have a rather aimless quality, wasting time, and failing to elicit valuable information.

The Socratic method solves this inadequacy by asking a series of focused, open-ended questions that encourage reflection. By surfacing knowledge that was previously outside of our awareness, the process produces insightful perspectives and helps recognize positive actions.

"The highest form of human excellence is to question oneself and others.”- Socrates

Neuro-Logically Reprogramming Limited Thinking

Many of us put needless pressure and time restrictions on ourselves to act quickly or do too much. This unsettles us and sometimes prevents us from recognizing the extent of the opportunities we have.

In this video, Kain proposes a simple Neuro-Linguistic Programming pattern that we can use to re-evaluate our experiences in life, which helps us break unhelpful thinking habits and replace them with new ones.

The Belief Change Cycle

According to the theory of self-organization, beliefs change through a natural cycle in which the parts of a person's system which hold the existing belief in place become destabilized.

It's only once we can recognize that our prevailing beliefs are not serving us that we become open to believing something new. In this video, Kain proposes how we grow and make paradigm shifts as we mature in life.

An Overview of Beliefs (Article)

Everyone believes something, even those who believe that they don't believe anything. Assuming that you don't believe in anything is still a belief.

But what are beliefs? Now, this is a great question. Many people never even get around to asking this all-important matter in life, "what are beliefs?" let alone exploring what beliefs we have in our lives and identifying where they came from. Brought out into the open (or to the conscious part of our mind) we might find out core beliefs to be quite surprising.

In this article, we'll take a broad look at what beliefs are and how they serve us.

1
The Four Main Stages of Life and Development

As children, the way we're wired to learn is by watching and imitating others. First, we learn physical skills, such as walking and talking. Then we develop social skills by watching and impersonating our peers around us.

Then, finally, in late childhood, we learn to adapt to our culture by observing the rules and norms around us and trying to behave in such a way that is generally considered acceptable by society. In this video, Kain discusses the four principal stages of life and development.

The Four Different Categories of Idea

Words often get in the way of creativity, so it's no surprise that the word "idea" often gets in the way of ideas. We use the word "idea" to describe thoughts and suggestions. A creative idea is something that captures peoples interest and might even inspire them to take action.

People smoothly work towards turning ideas in realities - when they believe in them (or are enthusiastic about them). In this video, Kain examines the four different types of idea that people can direct their energy and efforts towards meeting.

Six Keys to Unlocking Your Purposes in Life

As we commit to turning our ideas into a reality, it's essential to review (on an ongoing basis) that they align with our highest sense of life vision, so we recognize we are investing into something meaningful with our lives.

If we want to achieve something significant in life, it's crucial that our vision is more meaningful than just ourselves and includes creating an impact in the larger world in some way. In this video, Kain discusses six useful keys to unlocking your purpose in life.

4
Ideas First, Vision Second

Building on the foundational theory of Locke, Kain discusses the value of vision, and how ideas and vision tend to be yoked together; being the formula that has allowed people to drive humankind forward since the dawn of time. Ideas come first, and vision comes second.

Without vision, ideas would never be realized and vice-versa. Kain offers a range of notions to get you thinking about a 'starting point' for developing driving your life vision forward.

Smart Vision Boarding

The purpose of a vision board is to bring everything on it to life. These goals include the following areas: relationships, work and finances, home, personal growth (including spirituality, social life, education) and health.

In this video, Kain introduces the idea of 'smart' vision boarding. It's nice having productivity apps on our technical devices, but having a vision board, we can see every day, ensures we won't forget what's important to us. Vision boarding helps us to stay focused and answerable to ourselves.

6
Applying Vision Boarding in our Life Areas

Vision boards can help you create extraordinary results in your life. Creating your vision board can enable great motivation to help you stay focused on your goals. Vision boards are a tool commonly used by successful people because of the 'focusing' potential vision boards have.

In this video, Kain discusses how we can also use vision boarding in this way for effective micromanagement - which allows us to separate down the individual components of one area in our life, work or relationships.

Good News for Rule Breakers

There are people out there who are not going to know where to go next until you show them - this is what it means to live a life of legacy. We get frustrated about that which is, social injustice, for example, but motivation is about devotion to plugging voids and bringing about change.

History proves that it's conceivable to transform societies traditions; people have the freedom to question and transcend rules. We can begin to change society by influencing the lives of one person at a time.

Ikigai: Finding Your Direction in Life

Ikigai (生き甲斐, pronounced [ikiɡai]) is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being". The word refers to having a direction (or purpose) in life, which makes one's life worthwhile, and towards which an individual takes action and finds satisfaction and a sense of meaning.

In this lecture, Kain presents the notion of 'Ikigai'. If you don't yet know what you're good at; it's because you're still in the 'learning years'. You still need to pick something that you're going to commit to!

9
Evaluating Goal Congruence

In this video, Kain presents a model that enables us to appraise the congruence of our goals (or vision); Mr Robert Dilts initially proposed this model. Goal evaluation is a method used to determine the substantiality of the goals we establish and pursue.

If we are to devote the most significant years of our lives to pursuing goals, objectives (or an overarching life vision), we best make sure that they're at least congruent (and meaningful) ones!

12
Perceptual Pacing for Congruent Goal Setting

Future Pacing is a method where a client is asked to visualize themself in the future in a given desired situation. In this video, Kain introduces a process that splices together perceptual positions and future pacing.

This allows a person to evaluate the congruence of their goal at various points in the future. This process is incredibly helpful in enabling people to assess their goals, especially if they're in a place of indecision.

The Head, Heart & Gut Model

NLP centred coaching can generate an environment where a distinct type of dialogue can happen - one in which the motivations of the head, the heart, and the gut can be acknowledged and valued.

In a goal-setting situation where a persons head/heart/gut are aligned, people can begin to feel relaxed about sharing ideas that challenge their traditions. In this video, Kain explains the NLP head, heart, gut model.

Eliminating Barriers to Progress and Advancement

1
The Characteristics of a Fully Functioning Person

There are two ways we can function in this world. We can centre around what we do, or, we can centre around who we are (our true identity).

Most people live their lives from a place of doing, living through the mind, the quality of our life resides in our being, which reflects our authenticity.

Are you a human doing or a human being? In this video, Kain discusses Carl Rogers' Characteristics of a fully functioning person' and looks at what it means to be fully alive as a human being.

The Seven Choices of Maturity and Character

In life, there are seven choices that we can make that not only build strong character but also allow us to mature and live in alignment with the core of who we truly are. Most people are unaware, and thus, live their lives at the mercy of external circumstances.

We can make wise decisions that are based on our long-term objectives in life, or we can make decisions that are more about receiving instant gratification today. In this video, Kain presents seven examples of choices of maturity and character that we each can make.

How OK is it to be Completely Honest?

Honesty is a facet of moral character that connotes positive and virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness, straightforwardness etc. Honesty also involves being trustworthy, loyal, fair, and sincere.

The more prepared we are, to be honest about the reasons we DON'T have all the outcomes we want in life – the MORE empowered we become to make changes. In this video, Kain offers some further questions to help you get honest about the outcomes you currently have in life.

6
Present State to Desired State

The present state/desired state model gives us the means to determine the actual obstacles in our life by first defining the current state( where you are) and then describing the desired state (where you want to go).

In this video, Kain outlines three factors that are necessary for progress: acceptance of truth, faith for the ideal to happen and a compelling vision. He then discusses in detail how we can define a meaningful self-concept (desired state) as we consider the virtues that we want to embody.

7
A Dialogue about the Acceptance of Truth

Acceptance (in human psychology) is a person's assent to the reality of a situation, recognizing a process or condition (often an undesired situation) without trying to change it or protest it.

The concept is close in meaning to acquiescence, derived from the Latin acquiēscere (to find rest in).

In this video, Kain and Karen discuss the liberation that can be found in acknowledging and accepting the truth about our lives circumstances.

Substantial Grounds for Stability of State

Emotional stability is an excellent trait to develop. It means you can endure difficult circumstances, handle adversity, and remain fruitful and capable in the face of adversity. Some people reach a stage in life and realize that emotional stability is a crucial attribute to life progression.

We can gauge the maturity of our character by how emotionally and behaviorally stable we are. In this video, Kain discusses three different roads we can take towards growth; we can base our responses on feelings, faith or facts.

A Dialogue about Defence Mechanisms

Sigmund Freud (1894, 1896) noted several ego defences which he relates to throughout his recorded works. His daughter, Anna Freud (1936) further developed these ideas and elaborated on them, adding ten of her own. In this video, Kain and Karen discuss the defence mechanisms they can identify as still being present in their lives.

11
Further Unpacking Defence Mechanisms

Have you ever been rejected from a job you wanted, been in a social setting you didn’t feel comfortable in or had a stressful argument with your partner?

For most people, situations that bring uncertainty into our lives often trigger an unconscious set of ‘protective measures’ that allow us to manage our daily unpleasant emotions better.

In the short-term, our defence mechanisms can be adaptive. In the long run, their effect is quite the opposite. The routine use of defence mechanisms can reduce our effectiveness at processing the common hurdles and challenges that we face in day-to-day life.

The Cause to Effect Technique

Causality (also referred to as cause and effect) is influence by which one event, process or state (a cause) contributes to the production of another event, process or state (an effect) where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partially dependent on the cause.

In this video, Kain explains the cause to effect technique, which allows NLP Master Practitioners to quickly and effectively identify the role that we're playing in any prevailing predicaments we're experiencing.

Demonstration: The Cause to Effect Technique

Cause-and-effect thinking, or causality, allows us to make inferences about things that happen around us. Causality helps us know something as simple as "If I don't exercise regularly, I'll become lazy and unfit." to more complex things such as other people's intentions and behaviours.

In this video, Kain guides Karen through the Cause to Effect technique.

14
Exploring Your Own Defence Mechanisms

Defence mechanisms can be considered as a kind of self-deception. You might be employing them to hide emotional responses that you don't want to deal with yet.

However, it's done mostly on an unconscious level. You're not always going to be aware of how your mind or 'ego' will respond.

In this video, Kain presents a range of questions you can respond to, to establish which defence mechanisms are present in your personal life.
